How to wash your bras to maximise lifespan

How to wash your bras to maximise lifespan

(2 minute read)

There is only one way to wash your bras to maximise the lifespan and avoid those *oh-so-irritating* issues caused by washing your bra incorrectly.

If you don't know what issues I am referring to, think 'bent or twisted hooks', 'snapped underwire', 'crinkled cups' and 'stretched materials' 🤦🏽‍♀️

I promise you, all these aforementioned hassles are avoidable... if you hand wash your bras 💡

... So here is what you need to know... 👇🏽

Most bras are marked as hand wash only 💡

Why? Bras are generally made up of over 30 unique pieces, some of which are metal and/or delicate fabrics. Machine washing puts garments through some harsh twisting and spinning conditions. This results in premature wear and tear on the delicate fabrics, stitching and most certainly metal components in a bra.

What happens if I machine wash my bra? 🤷🏽‍♀️

Put simply, you will reduce the lifespan significantly. You may notice the following issues in near new garments:

  • Hooks twisting and pinching together
  • Ribcage band stretching (this is the biggest factor that impacts lifespan)
  • Underwires may snap
  • Underwires will poke out, perhaps not immediately, but eventually as the encasing is worn down in the rigour of machine washing
  • Moulded foam cups may crinkle

Other implications of machine washing or tumble drying 🙅🏽‍♀️

The most frustrating one for consumers is that not only may their bra no longer be functional, but a replacement will be rejected from the supplier. As the retailer, we too are unable to replace items that haven't been cared for according to manufacturers guidelines.

Is washing my bra on a gentle cycle in a wash bag ok? 🤷🏽‍♀️

If you don't want to hand wash then this is the next best option. However, if you are not prepared to risk your product wearing faster or brands refusing to replace faults than we do not recommend this option. Hooks, underwires and moulded cups can still become damaged when washing this way.

So how do I wash my bra to maximise lifespan? 🤷🏽‍♀️

1. Hand washing is the only way to go.

2. Use a gentle detergent, like a commercially available lingerie detergent.

3. Don't "wring" your bra out, lay it between two towels to help draw some moisture out of it

4. Hang it from the gusset (the part between the two cups), or even better - lay it flat to dry

5. Don't wash it more than you have to. Wash it when it's dirty or sweaty - ideally before it gets smelly 😆  The point being, most ladies won't need to wash their bras after every use.

I hope this information helps you get the most out of your bras support and lifespan ✌🏽
