Underwire Sports Bras

Underwire sports bras get a bad rap, but they’re not designed to be uncomfortable or dig in. Instead, underwire anchors the cup, supporting the breasts and helping them maintain their shape during movement. For those above a D cup, a wired sports bra provides the structure and support that larger breasted women often like, rather than simply compressing the breasts against the chest. Our expert bra fitters have curated this range of underwire sports bras to showcase styles that work beautifully with wire, sitting comfortably and securely against the ribcage rather than on breast tissue.

Why Wire Makes a Difference in a Sports Bra

Wire makes a huge difference in a high support sports bra, helping keep breasts secure and comfortable throughout your workout. While wirefree compression styles flatten the breasts to minimise movement, encapsulation styles with underwire support each breast individually within a structured cup. Without wire, the cup relies on fabric tension, and compression to do the heavy lifting. For D cups and above, a sports bra with underwire is often better equipped to maintain its structure during high-impact movement. The wire also allows the band to transfer weight away from the straps, helping prevent post-workout shoulder aches. That being said, we have lots of very popular wire free sports bras in G+ cup Sports Bras.

Getting the Wire to Sit Right

If your underwire sports bra feels uncomfortable, it’s likely the wire isn’t sitting correctly. It should lie flat against your ribcage and follow the natural crease beneath your breast, rather than sitting on breast tissue. If the wire pokes, lifts at the centre or rests directly on the breast, it’s a fit issue, not a problem with the style. The band may be too loose or the cup too small. If you’ve always sworn off wired sports bras after a bad experience, we recommend getting professionally fitted before ruling them out completely. In our experience, the right fit makes all the difference.

Are underwire sports bras better for support?

Underwire sports bras help to offer strong support for large breasts, by working to separate the breasts. The wire helps maintain the cup’s shape while transferring the weight of the breasts through to the band, creating consistent, reliable support during exercise. This can be particularly beneficial for fuller busts, where stability and control are essential. However, most cup sizes can still achieve a great level of support from a well-constructed wirefree style.

Are underwire sports bras uncomfortable?

Underwire sports bras should be comfortable, so if yours isn’t, it’s likely a fit issue. The band may be too loose, causing the wire to shift onto breast tissue, or your cup may be too small, forcing the wire outwards.

When correctly fitted, you shouldn’t really notice your wired sports bra at all - you should simply feel supported and secure throughout your workout, with the wire sitting flat against your ribcage and providing the stability you need.

Can you run in an underwire sports bra?

Yes, you can absolutely run in an underwire sports bra. In fact, many of the running bras our fitters recommend for clients with a D cup or above are wired. The underwire helps the cup maintain its shape, providing consistent support even over longer distances. A hot tip from the She Science team?

To help protect the elastic and wire casing, always hand wash your sports bra with underwire and leave it to air dry. With the right care, you’ll help maintain its fit, support and performance for much longer than just throwing it in the machine or dryer. Any form of machine washing will void any warranty from the manufacturer.
